Frozen and freeze-dried foods
These are freshly caught natural foods that were freeze-dried, or frozen for storage and can be fed to fishes at a later date, with no degradation of their food values. Frozen foods are high quality foods for your fish and are usually high in proteins and fats. You may start to notice that your fish have improved colors and they may even start breeding. However, they are one of the most expensive types of fish foods. They are a very good way to supplement your fish’s diet.
Their major benefits are high nutritional values, they won’t pollute your tank and they stay at the surface for long periods of time. Originally live foods, it is worth mentioning that freeze-dried or frozen foods are disease-free, as they are decontaminated by their manufacturers.
Freeze-dried and frozen fish foods were primarily developed for tropical and marine fish. These include tubifex worms, mosquito larvae, bloodworms, water fleas (Daphnia), krill and brine shrimp (Artemia salina). Like tablet foods, many freeze-dried types can be stuck on the glass or floated in the aquarium. In order to feed the bottom dwellers, you have to put them in a suitable weighted container.
Tubifex Worms – These nutritious frozen worms are sufficient for one feeding.
Water Fleas – The popular Daphnia is available in freeze-dried form.
Black Mosquito Larvae – This food is good for fishes you intend to breed as it improves condition.
Bloodworms – If you have carnivorous fish you may want to supplement their diet with some blood worms. Your other fish will love these as well. Blood worms are high in protein and only feed them to your fish occasionally.
Krill – These are small crustaceans that are often used to enhance the colors in tropical fish. They should be broken up if they are fed to smaller fishes. It is not recommended to feed krill daily to your fish. Use it as an occasional supplement to their diet.
Pacific Shrimps – These crustaceans are very similar to Krill, and can be fed to all types of fishes.
Baby Brine Shrimps – These very small crustaceans, commonly known as Artemia salina, are suitable for all types of fishes, even young fry.
