Black Ghost Knife Fish – Apteronotus albifrons
The black ghost knifefish(Apteronotus albifrons) is a member of the Apteronotidae family and originates from the Amazon Basin in South America. It is a timid and nocturnal fish but only one specimen of that fish should be housed when kept in smaller aquaria. In larger tanks, more than one black ghost knifefish may be kept as the fish is aggressive towards its own counterparts(also avoid any other electric fish). Suitable tankmates can be angel, discus and gouramis. Small fish should also be avoided as the black ghost knifefish(abbreviated BGK) is a predatory fish(Even tiger barbs can become live food). It sends a weak electric discharge to stun its prey and then eats them. Also avoid larger fish that may attack the BGK.
Size
This fish can get up to 50cm(20″) in size but may get to only 30cm(12″) in relatively small tanks.
Aquarium Conditions
The black ghost knifefish needs soft water with pH around 6.5 to 7 and temperature between 23C(73F) and 28C(82F). Your aquarium should have a hiding place for the BGK – a cave or a PVC tube will suffice. Being a nocturnal fish, th BGK will hide itself in the cave during the day, Also, the aquarium should not have too much light which might make the black ghost knifefish reluctant to show itself.
Feeding
The BGK can be trained to eat in your hand and you should feed it a varied diet of frozen or live foods, sinking pellets and flakes.
Breeding
The breeding of these species is not fully understood yet. However, there has been reports of breeding in large aquaria from individuals who luckily got a pair in their tanks. Keeping a group of them in a big pond may result to succesful breeding. Please share your experience with us.
